Administrator Email

Posted by LiNuX in Webmaster

I’ve actually told a few friends that manage websites to have their own email with their domain as the site url. Some listen and some don’t. Why should you have an email that tells everyone that you are the adminstrator of that site? Well first it seems a lot more professional than having just a yahoo or gmail account. And second people will know that the email address is linked to the site. Nobody wants to give away information to someone if they aren’t sure who they are giving it to.

If you have a domain just go to your web host control panel or domain control panel and set up an admin email. You can always set it to forward all the mail to your other email account whether its yahoo, gmail, or anything else. You have to know what your visitors questions are and then you can help them all out.

YaBB

Posted by LiNuX in Webmaster

YaBB is a forum content management software (CMS) that is pretty secure and easy to use. My gaming forum used to be a YaBB forum but before I tell you about that you have to know what it stands for. YaBB stands for Yet Another Bulletin Board and it is correct, there are litterally over a 100 different types of forum softwares out there and YaBB is yet another one.

YaBB uses the Perl computer language so it makes it much harder for hackers to hack. It is harder to code that php so it is less vulnerable to attacks. And its admin control panel is one of the easiest I have used so far. I have used it for my forum for about 5 months before switching to SMF also known as Simple Machines Forum. It is pretty safe but comes with a bad side of having not very attractive themes or skins. It has some pretty professional looking ones but those aren’t as good as SMF or phpBB skins. The modifications are also available but very scarce since Perl isn’t the easiest language out there. But if you want to try it out, you can always go ahead and see what I am talking about.

Yahoo’s Index Rates

Posted by LiNuX in Webmaster

People always argue that Google is the alltime best search engine in the world. Well I am not here to argue with that but I am here to talk about another huge search engine people tend to overlook for some reason. People don’t think that Yahoo! Search Engine is really that good but have you ever compared the search results of both Google and Yahoo? Yahoo seems to return more results and sometimes, the more results can mean that you found what you were looking for. Google tends to narrow down the search results on just a few sites.

Yahoo’s search results are good because the yahoo bots are more lively and they tend to Index a lot more pages from a site. By index I mean they enter it into the search engine so when you search a certain keyword, that site has a chance of coming up for that keyword. I have seen that with more than a few sites because yahoo returns about 3 or 4 times more backlink results than google ever has for me. Just a little tip for the next time you search.

Web Design Ideas

Posted by LiNuX in Webmaster

Web designing is something not everyone can do. It is extremely difficult and it takes a lot of time thus, requires a whole lot of patience. I have tried it myself but due to lack of time, I had to stop for a bit but I will eventually get back into it. Well one site that has caught my attention is called Web Design Ideas that can be found at WbDesignIdeas.com. They provide new and inovative tips for all old web designers and anyone starting out.

Web Design Ideas is updated about two to four times a day so there really is no need to worry about losing information or a gap in information. You probably will have more to read than you actually have time to read. They provide information on headers, footers, background, in content design, and much more. Well I have checked their header section and since I am not that great of a header creator for sites, I have found out some of the great effects a site can have. Now I have gotten some new ideas that I can use for my already made sites and some new to come ones in the future.

If you need new ideas for web designing or even if you are just starting out, you can check them out and see if they spark some new ideas for you. So good luck in the quest for learning something new.

Traffic Equals Money

Posted by LiNuX in Webmaster

Well I have been webmastering around for a while now and I have been stumbling upon a lot of things. I have learned a hell of a lot in the past few years about webmastering than when I first started out with a free host on tripod and just put images up. Well for one thing, I’ve found that if you combine your site with Google Adsense and if you have steady traffic, you can earn a lot. My arcade has been getting a few hundred hits a day and it makes a few dollars a day. I won’t tell you how much since that’s not what the post is about.

Even a few hundred visitors a day can equal to a lot of money for you if you know good keywords and know where to place your ads. You can have a PR6 site and make no money at all if you don’t know how to bring in people to visit your site and if your ads are completely out of site. So this is just a simple tip, if you have a lot of traffic, and if you use google adsense on your site, move the ad placements around and use different channels for each ad so you know where they are and then see what makes you more money.

Best Free Forum CMS

Posted by LiNuX in Webmaster

CMS Stands for Content Management Software and it can be referred to sites like Joomla, Mambo, Wordpress Blogs, and Forum softwares. Forum softwares are harder to manage and they are more dynamic. There are dozens of free forum softwares out there such as MyBB, YaBB, SMF, phpBB, and more. And today I will tell you about which I favor most.

I’ve used YaBB which stands for Yet Another Bulletin Board and it is pretty good. Easy admin management but bad in themes and modifications. I’ve used phpBB as well, it has a lot more skins and a lot more modifications than YaBB. But it’s easier for hackers to penetrate and shut down the forum. And thirdly, I’ve used SMF which stands for Simple Machine Forum. It has a lot of skins and it has a lot of modifications. Mods are also easier to install and themes are much easier to install than the rest.

If you want to try out a forum and see what it’s like, get SMF and try it out, you won’t regret the experience because I’ve used it for over 8 months and I’ve enjoyed it a lot. This was just a little tip and opinion from my experience with forum management.

Yahoo’s Backlink Jumps

Posted by LiNuX in Webmaster

Yahoo is a search engine just like Google and it is much older and has a bit more reputation. But still, it is a smaller company than Google. It isn’t very far though. It is one of the few websites that has a Page Rank of 10. Google is also another that has a Page Rank of 10. If some of you webmasters have noticed in the past few days, backlinks on yahoo are jumping up and down.

Here is an example, one day my forum had over 18,000 total backlinks. The next day, it shows less than 5,000 backlinks. I was shocked but I thought I’d wait it out anyway. The day after, backlinks went above 22,000. Well my point is, it doesn’t really matter about the backlink numbers, just know that all search engines have those numbers jumping up and down. This is just a warning for you webmasters so you won’t worry too much.

Backups

Posted by LiNuX in Webmaster

A backup is a copy of the file, folder, software, or website that you have. They call it a backup because if your original file goes wrong and you can’t use it anymore, then the “backup” is there to back you up and run in the place of the original. Making backups are crucial for most webmaster and their websites. If you own a very big and active forum and you haven’t backed up in a month. Then all of a sudden, your server crashes and you lose all the information. Your month old backup won’t do much to recover your stats unless you lost just a few dozen posts. Making an Online Backup of your site is also smart.

Programs like IBackup provides online space for you to backup your sites and other files. You can even set the backup to an automated scheduled backup. Set it to do that once a day and see how much time you save backing up. Their servers are strong and they have backups as well so you don’t have to worry about losing a month’s data anymore. This is a reputable company with several awards under its name so this is my recommended website. You can get free space to paid space. But either way, make sure you have some sort of backups for your files, you don’t want to regret it later. Good luck!
